Many of today's consumer technology innovations are connected to the web and to one another. With less than 10 percent of Americans now relying on over-the-air spectrum to watch TV, and more consumers using spectrum-hungry devices like tablets, smartphones and streaming devices, we need  more unlicensed spectrum than ever. Unlicensed spectrum is how we get online through Wi-Fi and how our wireless carriers manage constantly increasing traffic on their networks, and it is an ongoing catalyst for innovation.

We estimate that unlicensed spectrum generates $62 billion a year for the U.S. economy (PDF). Moreover, sales of devices that rely on unlicensed spectrum are on the rise, at the cumulative annual growth rate of roughly 30 percent.
