One Third of U.S. Homes Own a Smart Speaker

The growth of smart speaker ownership in the United States demonstrates a record setting example of Americans embracing AI-enabled devices. According to a new study from CTA, smart speaker ownership in the U.S. has almost doubled again. This paves the way for smart home related products in the home.

Approximately 31% of U.S. households own a smart speaker, an increase from just 15% in 2018, with the average number of smart speaker units per owner household at 1.9.

Looking to the future, 20% of households intend to purchase a smart speaker within the next 12 months. And according to CTA’s most recent Sales and Forecasts study, voice-controlled smart speakers are projected to sell 36.6 million units and earn $3.2 billion in revenue in 2019.

While consumers are embracing new technologies like smart speakers, CTA’s Ownership and Market Potential shows that “the three screens,” TVs, smartphone and laptops, are still the most owned tech in the U.S.
